Building on research being undertaken at the Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Research at QUT we present CE Bricolage™
Bricolage means “to make creative and resourceful use of whatever materials and assets are at hand, regardless of their original purpose”. Bricolage is often demonstrated through the utilisation of existing resources which may have been previously rejected or ignored. It can also be seen through re-organisation and redesign where the aim is to standardise and simplify.
CE Bricolage™ is not random experimentation; it is purposeful re-engineering and refocusing. Primarily it is the dynamic re-utilisation of current available assets and resources; whether human, physical or technological, to positively improve and enhance the current situation. This can provide substantial cost savings while promoting improved efficiency.
Companies engaging in CE Bricolage™ refuse to be constrained by the limitations imposed by conventional business thinking in regard to resource and asset utilisation. CE Bricolage™ is the true hallmark of organisational change.
Resources Are Objective and Definable
Regardless of how an organisation views its resource environment, all ‘assets’ are objective and definable and can be ‘maximised for a competitive advantage’. Drawing upon existing knowledge, CE recognise that the manner in which firms utilise existing resources plays an important role in creating superior value. We have identified that businesses using entrepreneurial initiatives to combine resources frugally while making do with the resources at hand; achieve sustained competitive advantage.
Examples of this process include examining unknown skill sets of staff, so that they may be utilised in a different area of business; utilising IT hardware / software to provide a service other than its original intent at time of purchase. This may even extend into assessing and redesigning the roles of third party providers thereby managing multiple requirements and fulfilling business needs in a more cost effective manner.
Effective Improvisation in Your Business
The concept of CE Bricolage™ including improvisation is a very appealing one, which deserves elaboration. One of the most well-known uses of improvisation stems from jazz music. Indeed – as jazz musicians will tell you – in order to be able to improvise you must have a lot of experience in playing. To master existing techniques and methods, you need to know when it is suitable to improvise and when you are expected to ‘play’ in harmony with the rest of the band. This contingency concept – adapting techniques and methods to the situation at hand – can be more important than an approach that imposes one particular solution for all possible situations.

Corporate Enhancement would like to acknowledge the research work being conducted at the Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Reserarch, QUT. The research of Dr Sandeep Salunke, published in a research vignette entitled “ACE Research Vignette: Competing through service innovation - the case of project-oriented firms” served as the initial inspiration for CE Bricolage™.
